Book of Jornada: Chapter 2+ Revamped Battery Pack Duo

Yesterday I bought another pair of Sanyo 18650 cells which are claimed to hold 3,400 mAh. The previous pair worked so well (over 16 hours runtime!) that I found no excuse not to revamp the other aging battery pack.

These are also "B" grade cells, not the best batch, but still very high quality ones. Prices are good. About USD$4 each.

On the forum the old hands are saying that soldering the cells to the connectors can be done safely (requiring low heat solder and quick action) and can ensure good connections. Personally I don't think it is necessary. Safety concern aside, I find using masking tape does the job just fine. Plus it is much easier to remove the cells next time. Wire/cable tape is not that good because over time it will get sticky and harder to remove.

With both revamped battery packs, now I can get more than 30 hours of runtime on battery power, which really underscores the major advantage of these CE devices: fast, small, efficient, cost-effective.

  1. My Jornada 720 still runs on the original batteries (still lasting 3 hours or so). Is this a straight fit-in replacement?

    1. The original battery cells are also 18650. So yes, new 18650 cells will fit in the battery pack casing. Just make sure that the cells are not "protected" (with an additional mechanism sitting on top of the positive terminal making the whole cell a few mm longer).
