Book of Sigmarion III: Chapter 2 SlashToShift

The major roadblock for me to get into using my Sigmarion III is the unconventional keyboard layout, especially the punctuations and various symbols spread all over the place.

Over last couple of weeks I was searching for an old Japanese app called SlashToShift. The app enables the user to redefine the values of many of the keys. Despite the fact that all the links on Japanese websites are dead, and nifty.com is in a way immune to the grand WaybackMachine (the largest online archive of websites, living or dead), I finally managed to track down a copy on some obscure Chinese software download website.

Since the original documentation and the app interface are in Japanese, I prepared a brief user guide in English for those who are interested in using this app on their Sig3. https://www.hpcfactor.com/scl/1087/QTA_Software/SlashToShift/version_1.50

SlashToShift v1.50 for Sigmarion I/II/III

I. Introduction

SlashToShift is an application designed for the NTT DoCoMo Sigmarion H/PC series to modify the original key settings, especially for users who are not used to the nonstandard keyboard layout. In addition to reassigning the “/” key as “R Shift” (as the name of the application suggests), this application also allows for a wide range of possibilities of reassigning the values to the other keys on the keyboard.

This application is intended to run on Sigmarion I, II (MIPS processor) and III (ARM processor) only. Do not run this program on other devices!

II. Installation

1.      Download the .zip archive. Extract the archive. Go to the extracted “s2s150” folder. For Sigmarion I/II, go to “MIPS”; for Sigmarion III, go to “ARM”.

2.      Copy the file “S2S.exe” to any location on the handheld or the storage card. In the following example, the application is copied to the “Windows” folder on the handheld.

III. Operation

1.      To run SlashToShift, simply double tap the file icon. Initially, the application will appear as a tray icon in the bottom right corner of the Taskbar.

2.      To configure the application, tap on the program icon. Choose “Setup”. A popup window will appear showing three tabs (Set, List, About).

3.      In the first tab (“Set”), you can choose the time limit of short press (see 5. below), and whether to activate the key combo using Ctrl and the Arrows keys (“Cur(sor)”).

4.    The second tab (“List”) is the main interface to customize and reassign the values of different keys.

For each key assignment, you can set three values: InKey (the original key value), SetKey (the new key value), Type (how to apply both values)

By default, the Slash key is reassigned to RShift, and RShift is activated in Type 1 method.

5.    For each new key assignment, you can choose three methods of activation:

Type 1: Short press as InKey, press and hold as SetKey

Type 2: Short press as InKey, long press as SetKey

Type 3: Short press as SetKey, long press as InKey

The boundary between short press and long press is determined by the time value (in ms, or millisecond) in the “Set” (first) tab as shown in 3.

You can also choose to turn on all the key reassignments by pressing the “All ON” button; conversely you can turn off all the key reassignments by pressing the “All Off” button.

6.     When the program is launched for the first time, a file named “keylist.txt” will be automatically generated in the same folder where S2S.exe is executed. This file records the custom key assignments in terms of keycodes.

7. A comprehensive list of keycodes can be found in the file named “vkeylist.txt” provided in the .zip archive.
